Home & Design | West by Midwest
Allison and Joe Sriver can quickly rattle off a list of things they love about their Brainerd-area getaway on the Whitefish Chain of Lakes: taking the pontoon out, morning coffee on the dock listening to the loons, and s’mores around the firepit. But what they savor most are the sunsets visible from the screened porch, signaling another relaxing end to a blissful day. The promise of those sunsets—especially for Joe, an amateur photographer who captures them through his lens—is what drew the Edina couple to the property, which offers wide lake views. “When we saw this lot, we knew immediately it was the one,” Allison says. That was the brief for Manhattan-based interior designer Neal Beckstedt, when a pair of clients called on him to decorate their new place: A 1928, three-bedroom apartment on the Upper West Side with high ceilings and leafy views of Central Park. It needed to be, in Beckstedt’s words, “Young and fun and cool while still respecting uptown. Bringing the downtown element to them—that was the challenge.” Luckily, he and his clients—a real estate developer and a learning specialist—had instant chemistry: “Neal understood that…

Spring Home Design: A historic West Seattle kitchen goes from clunky to sunny
THE “BEFORE” OF this story stretches back nearly a century to a significant architectural milestone that now grounds a newly elegant, supremely functional kitchen as the “after” hub of the home — and as homage. Brandon and Jill (plus their “two-legged kid,” who is 9, and their “four-legged kid,” who is a giant German shepherd) live in a historic 1927 French Colonial in West Seattle designed by Elizabeth Ayer, the first woman to graduate from the professional architecture program at the University of Washington and the first woman registered as an architect in the state. Brandon and Jill had driven by Ayer’s creation from time to time and always were drawn…
