Christmas might be behind us, but English Heritage is encouraging households to keep their decorations up a little longer to brighten the gloom of lockdown.

While many of us take our Christmas trees down on the Twelfth Night (5th or 6th January 2021), the charity has backed extending the display of decorations until Candlemas on Tuesday 2nd February, to spread some much-needed cheer.

The medieval ritual of Candlemas, which is also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ, traditionally sees people leave festive greenery around their homes for 40 days after Christmas. And, with England in its third national lockdown, this is something we can all get behind.

Posting on Twitter, the team wrote: ‘Cheer up these winter months by keeping your festive decorations up until Candlemas! In the Middle Ages, festive greenery decorated houses for 40 days after Christmas. Will you do as our medieval ancestors did and leave your festive decorations until 2nd February?’

In English Heritage’s poll, 51 per cent of people said they would be keeping their decorations up until February, while 49 per cent said it was considered bad luck to keep them up longer.

One wrote: ‘I always thought it was bad luck and took them down… wish I’d kept them up for a bit extra cheer now.’ Another said: ‘We have kept them up on many years until Candlemas – you need the lights and decoration much more in gloomy January and February than in the “tinsel season” of December!’
