Design of the Australian Rock Garden
I wrote recently about the Australian Rock Garden at the Arboretum & Botanic Garden at UC Santa Cruz, as a resource for home gardeners. For today’s column, we’ll outline the history, design and development of this special feature at the Arboretum. The accompanying photographs have been provided by the Arboretum’s volunteer photographer Bill Bishoff, with our appreciation. In the mid-1980s, the Arboretum received a large shipment of topsoil (some 15,000 cubic yards) that had been excavated from another location on the UCSC campus. This soil was delivered to the Arboretum’s Australian Section, designated as the Elvenia J. Slosson Research Garden. The Australian Garden’s Curator, Melinda Kralj, had conceived the development…

That has both potential buyers and sellers wondering where they stand. “As recession concerns weigh on consumer outlooks, our survey shows uncertainty has made its way into the minds of many buyers,” said Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com. Here are the major…

Tour a Once-Dated Tuscan-Style Home That Got a Soothing Refresh | Architectural Digest
The ’90s may be enjoying an aesthetic revival these days, but that doesn’t mean every one of the decade’s creations deserves celebration. In fact, when she first saw this house from the period, Los Angeles–based AD100 interior designer Mandy Cheng says she remembers thinking, “It looks very early-’90s Tuscan, and in a bad way.” The home—located in LA’s Pacific Palisades—showed off what Cheng describes as “modernish Santa Barbara Mediterranean style” exterior architecture. The interior spaces, many of them double height, glowed warmly with sunlight from large windows. But that glow revealed an array of glaring 30-year-old missteps: the highly polished marble floors throughout the ground level, say, or the conspicuously…
