The real estate buying frenzy is over
Source: FactSet; Chart: Axios Visuals Looks like America’s home buying binge is winding down. There’s a vibe shift visible in both the official data and in the anecdata from sellers, buyers and brokers. Why it matters: This is just what Jerome Powell ordered. The slowdown means the Fed’s rate hikes are working — cooling demand in an overheated market. “The buyers just stopped buying,” said Shauna Pendleton, an agent with Redfin in Boise, Idaho, until recently one of the hottest markets in the country. “Californication,” as she called it, drove an influx of buyers from the West coast, flush with cash courtesy of the also formerly booming stock market. Home Improvement Doesn’t Have to Raise Your Mortgage Rate
With the increase in home values and interest rates, many homeowners are finding themselves “house rich, cash poor,” meaning they have more equity in the value of their home than in liquid assets. Mystery vase that sat in UK family’s kitchen turns out to be Qing-dynasty treasure worth $1.5 million
A U.K. family recently discovered that a decorative vase in their kitchen is actually a rare Chinese artifact now worth more than a million dollars. On May 18, the 2-foot-tall vase was sold by U.K. auctioneer Dreweatts for £1.2 million (approximately $1.5 million). With its striking spherical shape, the blue-glazed vase is referred to as a “heavenly globe vase” (“tianqiuping” in Chinese) and features gold and silver elements. Its intricate markings reportedly indicate that it was made for the court of the Qianlong Emperor in the 1700s. Mark Newstead, a specialist consultant at Dreweatts for Asian Ceramics and Works of Art, explained to Dreweatts that the clouds, cranes, fans, flutes…

Inside Vanessa Carlton’s Magically Cozy Rhode Island Home | Architectural Digest
“We found it on Zillow, just like everyone did during the pandemic,” musician Vanessa Carlton says of her charming Federal post-and-beam house. She and her husband, fellow musician John McCauley, even purchased the Rhode Island home—which was built during the first few years of the 1800s—without ever seeing it in person. “We did a FaceTime walk-through,” Carlton says. “I know, it’s crazy.” And yet the house, which the couple share with their seven-year-old daughter, Sidney, has led to their “next life” in the Ocean State. The blind commitment to a centuries-old abode is a bit more understandable considering that Carlton and McCauley, whose renovation projects have grown larger over the…
